Unity Candle Ceremony — Civil I

(The Ceremony Table is directly behind Officiant.  On the Ceremony Table there is a larger center candle with two taper candles on either side.)

(The taper candles can be lit prior to the beginning of the ceremony or Officiant may light them just prior to the Unity Candle Ceremony.)

Officiant:  ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____, will you please step forward to the Ceremony Table.

(Officiant steps behind the Ceremony Table.  Bride and Groom step to the sides of the Ceremony Table.  A musical selection may play softly during the following:)

Officiant:  ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____ are going to light their unity candle, as a symbol of their marriage. The taper candles represent each of them in the fullness of their personhood. They come into their marriage relationship as individuals and they do not lose their identity, rather they create through their commitment the relationship of marriage. Therefore, three candles remain lighted, one for each of them and one for their marriage as symbols of their commitment to each other and to a lasting and loving marriage.

Officiant: You may now proceed in the lighting of the center candle.

(The volume of the music may be turned up as Bride and Groom each take a taper candle and lights the center candle together.)

(Bride and Groom then return to their previous places in front of Ceremony Table, after which Officiant  moves back to his/her previous position in front of couple.)

Officiant: ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____ your mothers have lit the two taper candles which symbolize your lives before today; your separate lives, separate families and separate sets of friends.

Officiant:  Lighting the center candle represents that your two lives are now joined to one light, and represents the joining of your two families and circles of friends into one. I ask that now each of you take one of the lit candles and that together you light the center candle.

Officiant: You may now proceed in the lighting of the center candle.

Officiant:  Lighting the center candle symbolizes that your lives are now joined to one and also the joining together of your two families and sets of friends to one.  The center candle represents not only the union of ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____ in marriage, but the unity formed by this new family and that your lives will now shine as one family.

(Bride and Groom then return to their previous places in front of Ceremony Table, the Child (or Children) return to his/her/their previous place(s), after which Officiant moves back to his/her previous position in front of couple.)

Unity Candle Ceremony — Civil VI — Parents Included

(The Ceremony Table is directly behind Officiant.  On the Ceremony Table there is a larger center candle with two taper candles on either side.)

Officiant:  ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____ , will you please step forward to the Ceremony Table.

(The parents come forward and light the taper candles. The parents then return to their seats.)

Officiant: The two taper candles have been lighted by the parents of the Bride and Groom.  These candles represent the couple’s lives up to this moment. The flames, representing the faith, wisdom, and love they have received from their parents, are distinct and each burns alone.

Officiant: The Bride and Groom will light the center candle to symbolize the union of their lives. As this one light burns undivided, so shall their love. From now on their thoughts shall be for each other rather than for their individual selves. Their joys and sorrows shall be shared alike. May the radiance of this one light and their journey together be a testimony or their unity.

Officiant: You may now proceed in the lighting of the center candle.

(The volume of the music may be turned up as Bride and Groom each take a taper candle and lights the center candle together.)

Candle Ceremonies

Unity Candle Ceremony — Religious III — Children Included

(The Ceremony Table is directly behind Officiant.  On the Ceremony Table there is a larger center candle with taper candles  for Bride, Groom  and Child (or Children) around it.)

(The taper candles can be lit prior to the beginning of the ceremony or Officiant may light them just prior to the Unity Candle Ceremony.)

Officiant: ___(Groom)_____ and ___(Bride)_____ and ___(Child or Children)_____, please step forward to the Ceremony Table.

(Officiant steps behind the Ceremony Table.  Bride, Groom and Child (or Children) step to the sides of the Ceremony Table.  A musical selection may play softly during the following:)

Officiant:  On this their wedding day, they make this loving commitment, to follow the greatest Commandment of all: “Love one another, as I have loved you.”  This they do in the hope that their union shall become a symbol of God's promise to merge two devoted lives into one and to join with these children as one family.  The distinct flames represent their lives to this moment; individual and unique.  To bring bliss and happiness to their home there must be the merging of these separate individuals into one family.

Officiant:  Together they will light the center candle.  This is what God meant when He said: “On this account a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one.”  From now on their thoughts shall be for each other rather than for their individual selves.  Their plans shall be mutual, their joys and sorrows shall be shared alike.  May this one flame be a reminder of their faith in the Lord who blesses us each day, for it is He who enriches their marriage and strengthens their family in every possible way.

Officiant: You may now proceed in the lighting of the center candle.

(The volume of the music may be turned up as Bride, Groom and Child (or Children) each take a taper candle and lights the center candle together.)

(Bride and Groom then return to their previous places in front of Ceremony Table, the Child (or Children) return to his/her/their previous place(s), after which Officiant moves back to his/her previous position in front of couple.)

Unity Candle Ceremony — Religious VI — Parents Included

(The Ceremony Table is directly behind Officiant.  On the Ceremony Table there is a larger center candle with two taper candles on either side.)

Officiant: Will the parents of the Bride and Groom please step forward.

(The parents come forward.)

Officiant: The parents of the Bride and Groom will light the two taper candles which represent the Bride and Grooms lives up to this moment.

Officiant: ___(Groom’s Mother & Father’s Name)_____ and ___(Bride’s Mother & Father’s name)_____, will you please light the taper candles.

(The parents light the taper candles and then return to their seats.)

Officiant: They are two distinct lights, each capable of going their separate ways.  To bring bliss and happiness to their home there must be the merging of these two lights into one light.  This is what God meant when He said: “On this account, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall be one flesh.”  From now on their thoughts shall be for each other rather than for their individual selves.  Their plans shall be mutual, their joys and sorrows shall be shared alike.

Officiant: As they each take a candle and together light the center candle, they will extinguish their own candles, thus letting the center candle symbolize the union of our lives into one flesh.  As this one light cannot be divided, neither shall their lives be divided. May the radiance of this one light be a witness of their unity in Christ.

Officiant: You may now proceed in the lighting of the center candle.

(The volume of the music may be turned up as Bride and Groom each take a taper candle and lights the center candle together.)
